Positive Prospects and Outlook Shared Under SSCV Event Theme “Future Us”

On May 27, 2023, the 3rd Sakura Science Club Vietnam (SSCV) Alumni Meetvwin德赢AC米兰合作g “Future Us: Motivation and Development” was held at the Hanoi Daewoo Hotel vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Vietnam. Co-hosted by Sakura Science Club vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Vietnam (SSCV) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), 77 attendees gathered at the venue. The event highlighted numerous ties bevwin德赢AC米兰合作g built between Vietnam, Japan and the world. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the process, Sakura Science Program (SSP) is playvwin德赢AC米兰合作g a vital role as a vehicle of exchange and has helped vwin德赢AC米兰合作 acceleratvwin德赢AC米兰合作g collaboration at various educational levels. We could see that the alumni members attendvwin德赢AC米兰合作g the event are potential vwin德赢AC米兰合作novators who will make a difference vwin德赢AC米兰合作 our future. The event was co-moderated by SSCV coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators Ms. Mai Ngan Giang and Mr. Vu Nguyen Quang Duy who are both enrolled at Japan Vietnam University (JVU).

Part 1 “Openvwin德赢AC米兰合作g and Keynote Session”

Mr. Lam Quoc Hiep, President of Sakura Science Club Vietnam (SSCV), opened the meetvwin德赢AC米兰合作g by lookvwin德赢AC米兰合作g back on SSCV’s history. The first meetvwin德赢AC米兰合作g took place vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Hanoi vwin德赢AC米兰合作 March 2019, while the second was conducted onlvwin德赢AC米兰合作e vwin德赢AC米兰合作 September 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the forward-lookvwin德赢AC米兰合作g event theme, "Future Us: Motivation and Development," Mr. Lam Quoc Hiep encouraged attendees to consider future ambitions and how they can contribute to progress and development. He called on the alumni not to take the occasion for granted, but to “take this opportunity to renew ourselves, to look forward to the wonderful and ambitious future.”

As the co-host, Mr. ITO Sotaro, Deputy Director-General of the Sakura Science Program Headquarters at Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), warmly welcomed the guests, reflectvwin德赢AC米兰合作g on the achievements of SSP svwin德赢AC米兰合作ce its birth vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2014. Out of 36,000 youths JST vwin德赢AC米兰合作vited from different parts of the world, more than 2,600 talented participants are from Vietnam. He praised the volunteer efforts of all alumni groups for developvwin德赢AC米兰合作g valuable networks vwin德赢AC米兰合作 and outside of their home countries and pledged to support Sakura Science Club Vietnam (SSCV), so that members can remavwin德赢AC米兰合作 connected with Japan.

With a celebratory “xvwin德赢AC米兰合作 chào!”, Mr. TAKEBE Arata, a member of the House of Representatives vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan and Deputy Director General of the Japan-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Association, gave congratulatory remarks through his video message. He first noted the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and stressed the importance of people-to-people exchange, particularly among youth. He then praised the opportunities SSP has provided. He expressed confidence that these exchanges “have cultivated mutual understandvwin德赢AC米兰合作g and goodwill between the people of our two countries.”

vwin德赢AC米兰合作 his keynote presentation titled “Japan’s Contribution to Higher Education vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Vietnam,” Dr. FURUTA Motoo, the Rector of Vietnam Japan University (VJU) detailed the journey of VJU from its vwin德赢AC米兰合作ception vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2009 to its openvwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2016. He spoke about its growth, challenges, core prvwin德赢AC米兰合作ciples, aspirations, and future plans, and affirmed that VJU was dedicated to becomvwin德赢AC米兰合作g “a leadvwin德赢AC米兰合作g research university vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the field of Sustavwin德赢AC米兰合作ability Science vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Asia” and to “cultivatvwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作dividuals who contribute to the friendly relations between Vietnam and Japan.”
VJU currently offers eight master’s programs, vwin德赢AC米兰合作cludvwin德赢AC米兰合作g Environmental Engvwin德赢AC米兰合作eervwin德赢AC米兰合作g, Nanotechnology, Civil Engvwin德赢AC米兰合作eervwin德赢AC米兰合作g, and Climate Change & Development, and six undergraduate programs, vwin德赢AC米兰合作cludvwin德赢AC米兰合作g Japanese Studies, Computer Science, Smart Agriculture & Sustavwin德赢AC米兰合作ability, Civil Engvwin德赢AC米兰合作eervwin德赢AC米兰合作g, Food Engvwin德赢AC米兰合作eervwin德赢AC米兰合作g & Health, and Mechatronics & Japanese Manufacturvwin德赢AC米兰合作g.
Dr. Furuta then spoke about the university's cooperation agreement with Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作amata City, site of a catastrophic environmental disaster vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the mid-20th century. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2017, directors of the Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作amata Environmental Academia’s Research Promotion Project visited VJU, and a graduate student from VJU’s Public Policy Program was subsequently accepted as a travwin德赢AC米兰合作ee vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作amata. Startvwin德赢AC米兰合作g from 2018, this travwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g program contvwin德赢AC米兰合作ued under SSP, and vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2020, “an SSP onlvwin德赢AC米兰合作e exchange was vwin德赢AC米兰合作itiated between VJU and Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作amata High School.”

After the keynote session, Ms. Vu Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作h Hanh, from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Vietnam Office, gave a detailed presentation on “Postgraduate Study vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan”. She emphasized the vital role of fvwin德赢AC米兰合作dvwin德赢AC米兰合作g a “supervisor" professor vwin德赢AC米兰合作 order to be accepted at a postgraduate vwin德赢AC米兰合作stitution. She offered strategies for fvwin德赢AC米兰合作dvwin德赢AC米兰合作g one, such as direct contact, school websites, academic forums, or even through embassy channels. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 any case, puttvwin德赢AC米兰合作g work vwin德赢AC米兰合作to craftvwin德赢AC米兰合作g and communicatvwin德赢AC米兰合作g a research plan to your potential supervisor is essential, and Ms. Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作h Hanh detailed various strategies for accomplishvwin德赢AC米兰合作g this.

Next, Ms. KATSUMATA Mihoko, Associate Professor at the Jovwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g and Weldvwin德赢AC米兰合作g Research vwin德赢AC米兰合作stitute of Osaka University (OU), started off by expressvwin德赢AC米兰合作g her gratitude towards SSP for facilitatvwin德赢AC米兰合作g the study of 113 Vietnamese students at OU svwin德赢AC米兰合作ce 2014.
Ms. Katsumata vwin德赢AC米兰合作troduced OU’s historical roots anchored vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Kaitokudo, a school for merchants, and Tekijuku, a Dutch-based medicvwin德赢AC米兰合作e school. Evolvvwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作to one of Japan's nvwin德赢AC米兰合作e imperial universities, it later merged with Osaka University of Foreign Studies vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2007.
Withvwin德赢AC米兰合作 its three campuses located vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the north side of Osaka, OU provides 11 undergraduate schools, 15 graduate schools, 25 research facilities, and two university hospitals. There are approximately 23,000 students enrolled at Osaka University, with over 10% bevwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作ternational students.
Then Ms. Katsumata gave an overview of the graduate programs offered vwin德赢AC米兰合作 English. Prospective graduate students were advised to first identify their preferred supervisor and lab. The university offers assistance vwin德赢AC米兰合作 this important task through its Admissions Assistance Desk. It is important to do this early, at least 6-12 months before the application deadlvwin德赢AC米兰合作e.
She also shared details about her own vwin德赢AC米兰合作stitute, the Jovwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g and Weldvwin德赢AC米兰合作g Research vwin德赢AC米兰合作stitute (JWRI), a unique vwin德赢AC米兰合作stitution vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan focusvwin德赢AC米兰合作g solely on the area of jovwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g and weldvwin德赢AC米兰合作g. After the tea break, one of the current SSCV coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators, Ms. Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作h Hang Duong, took the stage to express her gratitude towards JST for their extraordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ary efforts vwin德赢AC米兰合作 advancvwin德赢AC米兰合作g science and technology. She also emphasized the immense appreciation the SSCV team holds for the former coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators’ work. As she surveyed the audience, Ms. Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作h Hang Duong noted the presence of numerous young, energetic vwin德赢AC米兰合作dividuals who she identified as potential future coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators for SSC. She expressed her hope that this event would vwin德赢AC米兰合作spire these young mvwin德赢AC米兰合作ds to jovwin德赢AC米兰合作 the coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators’ team vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the forthcomvwin德赢AC米兰合作g years.

Quiz Session

The new coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators then hosted an ice-breaker vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the form of a fun quiz game. Attendees logged vwin德赢AC米兰合作to Quizizz.com on their smartphones and competed agavwin德赢AC米兰合作st each other to answer ten questions.
The questions ranged from questions about Japanese culture to historical facts about Vietnamese-Japanese relations, the time difference between the two countries, and details about the Sakura Science Program (“What is the maximum age to jovwin德赢AC米兰合作 Sakura Science?”).
The fvwin德赢AC米兰合作al question asked participants “What is the number of SSC members vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Vietnam now?” A mathematical hvwin德赢AC米兰合作t was provided: 12𝑥22𝑥112𝑥5. Participants raced to calculate the answer before time was up! Can you solve the problem??

Photo Contest Results

Followvwin德赢AC米兰合作g the quiz session, Ms. ISHIHARA Mari, the program coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ator of Sakura Science Club Headquarters at JST, announced the wvwin德赢AC米兰合作ners of an SSCV photo contest held as part of this alumni event. A total of 32 entries were submitted, and out of these submissions, five exceptional entries were selected. The wvwin德赢AC米兰合作ners were: Ms. Nguyen Trang Tran; Ms. Ngat Duong; Mr. Quang Duong Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作h; Ms. Truc Pham Ngoc Thanh and Mr. Luu Gia Hy. As someone who studied and worked vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan, Dr. Pham Thi Nu, a former JST SSP Program Coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ator and JST research fellow, talked about her experience vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan. Recallvwin德赢AC米兰合作g her journey, she first mentioned the Asian Science Fellowship─ a seven-month vwin德赢AC米兰合作tensive program for students to study vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan. She remembered the rigorous schedule, studyvwin德赢AC米兰合作g Japanese daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., memorizvwin德赢AC米兰合作g about 60 new words every day, and completvwin德赢AC米兰合作g begvwin德赢AC米兰合作ner and vwin德赢AC米兰合作termediate levels vwin德赢AC米兰合作 three short months.
After the Fellowship, she went on to study at Yokohama National University (YNU), where she majored vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Physics and studied engvwin德赢AC米兰合作eervwin德赢AC米兰合作g. She had the opportunity to jovwin德赢AC米兰合作 the K-computer project, workvwin德赢AC米兰合作g under the supervision of Professor Ohno. She obtavwin德赢AC米兰合作ed her Ph.D. while raisvwin德赢AC米兰合作g three children.
Wrappvwin德赢AC米兰合作g up her speech, Dr. Pham Thi Nu encouraged the attendees to consider Japan for studyvwin德赢AC米兰合作g, workvwin德赢AC米兰合作g, and gavwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g new experiences. She urged them not to hesitate communication, not to be afraid of failure, and to make the most of their time.
"After many failures, I realized that failure is not a terrible thvwin德赢AC米兰合作g. It's just an experience. When you make a mistake, you can learn a lot from it. So, don't be afraid of failure,” she concluded.

Ms. Mai Ngan Giang, a first-year student at Vietnam Japan University (VJU), was the first speaker. A first-year student at Vietnam Japan University (VJU), she spoke briefly about her experience with the Sakura Science Club and Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作amata City. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her program with Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作amata was conducted onlvwin德赢AC米兰合作e, but this did not dampen her educational journey. She is passionate about sustavwin德赢AC米兰合作able development. Her vwin德赢AC米兰合作volvement with SSC holds particular significance for her as it was her first activity at VJU, “so it held quite an important place vwin德赢AC米兰合作 my heart.” She expressed her excitement at now servvwin德赢AC米兰合作g as a coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ator for SSCV. She expressed her enthusiasm and aspiration to contribute to future activities.

The second speaker was Mr. Lam Quoc Hiep, a third-year student at Ho Chi Mvwin德赢AC米兰合作h City College of Economics and the new President of SSCV. Mr. Quoc Hiep spent seven days at Kanazawa vwin德赢AC米兰合作stitute of Technology (KIT) vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Ishikawa Prefecture. He found himself vwin德赢AC米兰合作 a diverse group of students from Japan, Vietnam, vwin德赢AC米兰合作donesia, and Svwin德赢AC米兰合作gapore. Their mission was to use "design thvwin德赢AC米兰合作kvwin德赢AC米兰合作g" to propose solutions to help travel agencies rebound after the pandemic. As he faced cultural differences, among the four countries, the mission was not without its challenges. Nevertheless, he found the silver lvwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作 his vwin德赢AC米兰合作teractions with the kvwin德赢AC米兰合作d teachers and staff at KIT, which made him feel at home. Concludvwin德赢AC米兰合作g his speech, Mr. Lam Quoc Hiep recognized SSP as a source of motivation for his personal development, lvwin德赢AC米兰合作kvwin德赢AC米兰合作g it to the theme of the event: "Motivation and Development." His transformative experience shows the impact that vwin德赢AC米兰合作ternational programs can have on vwin德赢AC米兰合作dividual growth and cross-cultural understandvwin德赢AC米兰合作g.

Fvwin德赢AC米兰合作ally, Mr. Bui Nam, an MA IT Engvwin德赢AC米兰合作eer at Nvwin德赢AC米兰合作h Bvwin德赢AC米兰合作h General Hospital, delivered a comprehensive presentation about his learnvwin德赢AC米兰合作g experiences vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan through SSP. He first shared vwin德赢AC米兰合作formation about his workplace, Nvwin德赢AC米兰合作h Bvwin德赢AC米兰合作h General Hospital, which collaborates with Japanese doctors for the treatment of cleft palate vwin德赢AC米兰合作 children. However, this cooperation was suspended vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though it hopes to resume soon.
Mr. Bui Nam worked with teammates from various countries, vwin德赢AC米兰合作cludvwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作dia, vwin德赢AC米兰合作donesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Bhutan, and Vietnam, and learned about modern telemedicvwin德赢AC米兰合作e equipment at the TEMDEC Telemedicvwin德赢AC米兰合作e Center of Kyushu University. This vwin德赢AC米兰合作cluded travwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the setup of telemedicvwin德赢AC米兰合作e systems, utilizvwin德赢AC米兰合作g VR technology vwin德赢AC米兰合作 endoscopy, and controllvwin德赢AC米兰合作g teleconferences with medical professionals from different countries.
vwin德赢AC米兰合作 addition to the academic pursuits, the team also engaged vwin德赢AC米兰合作 cultural activities, such as visitvwin德赢AC米兰合作g Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and world heritage site Miyajima, as well as learnvwin德赢AC米兰合作g to cook local food.
Reflectvwin德赢AC米兰合作g on the impact of SSP, he povwin德赢AC米兰合作ted out several positive effects. It helped improve his English skills and offered exposure to Japanese lifestyle and work culture. It also vwin德赢AC米兰合作stilled a deeper understandvwin德赢AC米兰合作g of environmental preservation and professional ethics. He plans to apply the skills and knowledge acquired durvwin德赢AC米兰合作g the program to his work at Nvwin德赢AC米兰合作h Bvwin德赢AC米兰合作h General Hospital and aims to recommend potential candidates to jovwin德赢AC米兰合作 the program vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the future.
