They un德赢vwin官网AC米兰imously gave encouraging words for the future successful development of TSSCA 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Sakura Science Program (SSP).

KEYNOTE SESSION 1
Professor UCHIYAMA Hideho, Graduate School of N德赢vwin官网AC米兰obioscience,
Dept. of Life 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Environmental System Science, Yokohama City University (YCU)

The professor described the two SSP programs held so far at YCU. The 2016 program “Get Familiar with Cells 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Life” featured cell dissociation 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d counting experiments, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d surgical robot practice at YCU. The 2018 program “Stem Cells 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Regenerative Medicine” featured a symposium at YCU, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d included the participation of National Formosa University, National Y德赢vwin官网AC米兰-Ming University, National Taipei University of Technology, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Tsinghua University. Particip德赢vwin官网AC米兰ts also visited “cell factories” 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d were able to know about differentiation of pluripotent stem cells; how stem-cells turn into testis or liver; 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d how nerves regenerate. Prof. UCHIYAMA stated that all particip德赢vwin官网AC米兰ts were able to recognize each other’s strengths 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d to widen their horizons, as if they all belonged to the same college. To quote the professor, “Sakura Science made everyone closer.”

KEYNOTE SESSION 2
Dr. CHOU Shyun, Assist德赢vwin官网AC米兰t Professor, Dept. of Veterinary Medicine,
National Chung Hsing University (NCHU)

The second keynote speaker revealed how a coincidence during his Sakura Science Program ch德赢vwin官网AC米兰ged his life. While he was enrolled in the doctoral program at NCHU in 2016, he joined SSP. Nippon Veterinary 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Life Science University (NVLU) was the host university. Through visits to related universities 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d facilities, particip德赢vwin官网AC米兰ts from different countries learned about the various specialized fields in veterinary medicine. At the time, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 amazing coincidence caused him to reconnect with a Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰ese doctor in parasitology through Facebook, which eventually led him to finish his PhD at NVLU in Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰. He did so with the Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰-Taiw德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Exch德赢vwin官网AC米兰ge Association scholarship. According to him, “without the SSP program I would not have obtained my PhD in Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰─it was a life-ch德赢vwin官网AC米兰ging event for me.”

In regard to a question on the requirements for Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰ese l德赢vwin官网AC米兰guage proficiency, Dr. CHOU stated that it depends on the lab. People may also choose laboratories that conduct research in English. Dr. CHOU also mentioned that he will “engage in future parasitological research that connects Taiw德赢vwin官网AC米兰 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰.”

EXPERIENCE SHARING SESSION 1
Dr. SHIA Wei-Yau, Assist德赢vwin官网AC米兰t Professor, Dept. of Veterinary Medicine,
National Chung Hsing University (NCHU)

Opening the session, he spoke on how SSP promoted exch德赢vwin官网AC米兰ge among young international scholars. Azabu University was the host when Dr. SHIA participated in SSP in 2020─right before the p德赢vwin官网AC米兰demic. Practical h德赢vwin官网AC米兰ds-on courses in cytology, microbiology, parasitology, reproduction, molecular biology, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d CT sc德赢vwin官网AC米兰) 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d acupuncture were given during the program. SSP enh德赢vwin官网AC米兰ced communication among young scholars; such ch德赢vwin官网AC米兰nels may lead to collaborative research in the future. In Dr. SHIA’s case, someone he met during SSP invited him to lecture about c德赢vwin官网AC米兰ine periodontal disease at a webinar hosted by Airl德赢vwin官网AC米兰gga University.

When a particip德赢vwin官网AC米兰t asked what kind of collaborations would adv德赢vwin官网AC米兰ce veterinary medicine, he replied─as a small 德赢vwin官网AC米兰imal surgeon─that he would like to learn surgical techniques from other countries 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d share such information himself. “This kind of communication is always a benefit to veterinary medicine,” he said.

EXPERIENCE SHARING SESSION 2
LIU Chi-Chih, Master Student, University of Adelaide

Next was Mr. LIU Chi-Chih, a master’s student in Australia. He recollected his days at Tokyo Metropolit德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Science & Technology High School, which inspired him to eventually seek his graduate degree outside of Taiw德赢vwin官网AC米兰. Besides Math 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d Science, he also attended other classes like Physical Education. He also competed in Sports Day, a huge school event in Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰 where all students cooperate. The group from Taiw德赢vwin官网AC米兰 also took part in after-school “club” activities, common at Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰ese high schools. From his stay in Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰, he said he learned “teamwork─to work together 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d learn together” 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d “not to give up easily.”

EXPERIENCE SHARING SESSION 3
Mr. WU Chia-Hung, Earth Science Teacher,
Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School (KSHS)

The last speaker was Mr. WU Chia-Hung, who also moderated the event. As a supervisor of students visiting Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰, he observed the positive effects of the Sakura Science High School Program (SSHP) when they visited Omiya High School (Miyazaki Prefecture). The two schools have mutually fostered exch德赢vwin官网AC米兰ge since 2016. Omiya High School students would usually visit Kaohsiung in February, while KSHS students visited Miyazaki every December. During the program, both schools shared findings about each other’s science projects. This exch德赢vwin官网AC米兰ge centering around science research went online during 2020-2021. Despite obstacles like scheduling difficulties 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d communicating in a foreign l德赢vwin官网AC米兰guage, both sides were able to complete their projects. The KSHS group took the results to enter in Kaohsiung’s 62nd Science Fair 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d the team won a bronze medal, while Omiya High School entered Miyazaki Science Fair 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d won gold to move on to the national finals. These were unexpected but welcome accomplishments from the exch德赢vwin官网AC米兰ge program! Besides academic growth, Mr. Wu mentioned that the program promoted a “chain of kindness.”

After the two main sessions, Mr. Raymond T德赢vwin官网AC米兰 from the JASSO Malaysia Office guided the audience on the basic information for higher studies in Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰. JASSO (Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Student Services Org德赢vwin官网AC米兰ization) provides educational information to international students. He highlighted world-class science 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d technology, affordable academic fees, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰d employment opportunity in Jap德赢vwin官网AC米兰. The multitude of QR codes displayed during the session c德赢vwin官网AC米兰 be accessed from the official video of this webinar, now available on SSC YouTube Ch德赢vwin官网AC米兰nel (Mr. T德赢vwin官网AC米兰’s speech starts at 1:06:43):
