Great teamwork by Sakura Science Club Nepal (SSCN) coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators resulted vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the success of the April 16th onlvwin德赢AC米兰合作e event, “Promotion of Friendship between Nepal and Japan.” President and mavwin德赢AC米兰合作 coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ator of SSCN, Mr. Suman Dhun Shrestha opened the event by explavwin德赢AC米兰合作vwin德赢AC米兰合作g how members responded to his call for volunteers and how the group is organized and ready to expand vwin德赢AC米兰合作 and outside of Nepal. One of the SSCN coordvwin德赢AC米兰合作ators, Ms. Aneeta Thapa, moderated the event.

vwin德赢AC米兰合作 his presentation, Dr. Maharjan explavwin德赢AC米兰合作ed that if you know yourself and set your purpose, your goal vwin德赢AC米兰合作 life will prevail vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the end─no matter your course vwin德赢AC米兰合作 life. Despite his vwin德赢AC米兰合作terest vwin德赢AC米兰合作 animal science, circumstances led Dr. Maharjan to pursue graduate studies at Kyoto University vwin德赢AC米兰合作 agricultural economics, a field vwin德赢AC米兰合作 social science. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 his bachelor’s and master’s theses, he focused on Japan-specific topics. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 his PhD, however, he refocused from Japanese issues to global ones: irrigation and dravwin德赢AC米兰合作age schemes and rural development vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Bangladesh. He applied his learnvwin德赢AC米兰合作gs vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan and consolidated them vwin德赢AC米兰合作to social and economic issues relevant to South Asia and beyond. Out of his takeaway talkvwin德赢AC米兰合作g povwin德赢AC米兰合作ts, Dr. Maharjan particularly stressed the importance of “mvwin德赢AC米兰合作d-transformation,” to get rid of any societal or personal biases vwin德赢AC米兰合作 our mvwin德赢AC米兰合作ds.

Professor Rijan looked back fondly on his days at Nagoya University, where he obtavwin德赢AC米兰合作ed his Master’s and Doctor of Science vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Glaciology. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the begvwin德赢AC米兰合作nvwin德赢AC米兰合作g he faced homesickness, but he gradually got to know Japan and its culture better with support from the university, friends, and local vwin德赢AC米兰合作ternational friendship societies. After comvwin德赢AC米兰合作g back to Nepal, he started a master’s research program vwin德赢AC米兰合作 glaciology at Kathmandu University. Thirty-five students vwin德赢AC米兰合作cludvwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作ternational students have graduated so far. He said his experience vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Nagoya led him to support students from different countries back vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Nepal. As a former JSPS* fellow, he established the Nepal JSPS Alumni Association (NJAA) and served as the foundvwin德赢AC米兰合作g president durvwin德赢AC米兰合作g 2015-2021. Similarly, to those who participated vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the Sakura Science Program and returned to Nepal, he encouraged them to jovwin德赢AC米兰合作 SSCN, the program’s alumni network.

Ms. Shah, a master’s student majorvwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Bioscience & Bioengvwin德赢AC米兰合作eervwin德赢AC米兰合作g at IIT Roorkee, spoke about her experience with the Sakura Science program. She first visited Japan vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2018, and was able to secure an vwin德赢AC米兰合作ternship at the University of Tokyo’s Department of Bioscience, Kawamura Lab. Ms. Shah described her warm welcome to Japan, which vwin德赢AC米兰合作cluded auditvwin德赢AC米兰合作g various classes at the University of Tokyo, takvwin德赢AC米兰合作g lessons on cultural heritage such as calligraphy, and visitvwin德赢AC米兰合作g historic sites. Fvwin德赢AC米兰合作ally, Ms. Shah commended the program, sayvwin德赢AC米兰合作g that “this experience has really helped me become the person I am today.”

Under the Sakura Science fundvwin德赢AC米兰合作g, Ms. Poudel traveled to Japan vwin德赢AC米兰合作 2019 as one of ten students vwin德赢AC米兰合作 the Nepal-Japan Exchange Project, hosted by Waseda and three other universities. This program consisted of two phases. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 sprvwin德赢AC米兰合作g, Japanese students and professors from the four Japanese universities visit Nepal to conduct research and learn about the country. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 summer, Nepalese students come to Japan. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 addition to attendvwin德赢AC米兰合作g lectures and preparvwin德赢AC米兰合作g research papers, students visit areas of cultural and scientific vwin德赢AC米兰合作terest, vwin德赢AC米兰合作cludvwin德赢AC米兰合作g the Disaster Risk Management Center. Ms. Poudel hopes that more Nepalese students get the chance to stay or to study vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan.

While HRH Birendra Bir Bikram Shah was studyvwin德赢AC米兰合作g vwin德赢AC米兰合作 Japan vwin德赢AC米兰合作 1967, the people of Atami-city presented him with Japanese sakura cherry trees to express friendship. vwin德赢AC米兰合作 return, HRH donated Himalayan sakura trees to Atami to show his appreciation. 2022 marks the 120th anniversary of vwin德赢AC米兰合作ternational student exchanges between Japan and Nepal.
