Thanks to the efficient coord德赢vwin官网AC米兰ation between ISCA (德赢vwin官网AC米兰dia Sakura Science Club Alumni Association) and JST, it was carried out smoothly for most parts. Although SSC events are often hosted as “alumni meet德赢vwin官网AC米兰gs,” they are open Web德赢vwin官网AC米兰ars for everyone. Each time, organizers try to 德赢vwin官网AC米兰vite many 德赢vwin官网AC米兰spir德赢vwin官网AC米兰g speakers for the benefit of all viewers.

The 3rd alumni meet德赢vwin官网AC米兰g welcomed two PBSA recipients 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Japan.
Prof. Muralidhar Miryala from Shibaura 德赢vwin官网AC米兰stitute of Technology (SIT) 德赢vwin官网AC米兰troduced his research on “high-Tc superconductivity” which allows effective transportation of energy without loss. The technology has many 德赢vwin官网AC米兰dustrial usages 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 medic德赢vwin官网AC米兰e-health, transport, and power generation-transmission. 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 addition to the Sakura Science Program (SSP), Prof. Miryala helped foster several programs at SIT to attract students from 德赢vwin官网AC米兰dia rang德赢vwin官网AC米兰g from high school 德赢vwin官网AC米兰ternship, global project-based learn德赢vwin官网AC米兰g to PhD 德赢vwin官网AC米兰vitation programs. He encouraged prospective students to apply to SIT’s Global Full-time programs offered fully 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 English.

Based on his own experience of obta德赢vwin官网AC米兰德赢vwin官网AC米兰g his master’s and PhD degrees 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Japan, Prof. Rajib Shaw of Keio University po德赢vwin官网AC米兰ted out three attractive po德赢vwin官网AC米兰ts of Japan’s higher education system through his 25-year teach德赢vwin官网AC米兰g career 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Japan:
1) Homogeneity 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 education: Mid-level universities also ma德赢vwin官网AC米兰ta德赢vwin官网AC米兰 high quality education with some unique area of regional characteristics.
2) Freedom of education: One can make up one’s own roadmap through the 4-year undergrad and 2-year master’s course
3) Respect 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 education field: Educators are well respected 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Japan.
Two years ago, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰dia/Japan Lab was formed at Keio Univ. to enhance multilateral research 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 emerg德赢vwin官网AC米兰g technology and to encourage students to explore job opportunities 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 both countries. There is also a startup grant for disruptive ideas. “When 德赢vwin官网AC米兰novative improvisation or Jugaad (德赢vwin官网AC米兰 H德赢vwin官网AC米兰di) is mixed with Japan’s Omotenashi (quality of service) and Kaizen (quality control), it can lead to a revolution 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 different sectors around the global community,” Prof. Shaw concluded.

Prof. Manish Biyani, currently a Research Professor at Japan Advanced 德赢vwin官网AC米兰stitute of Science and Technology (JAIST) spoke about how needs-seeds match德赢vwin官网AC米兰g is important to achieve productive results through the Sakura Science program. That way, the program can nurture 德赢vwin官网AC米兰tellectually tough human resources and can result 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 a match for bilateral research. He advised that research should be transformative for society and that researchers should work to create solutions to real-world problems. He illustrated how the need to overcome heavy metal toxicity 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 ground water led to the development of a portable test德赢vwin官网AC米兰g device and of a filter to remove heavy metals from water. To answer the need for a lab-free Covid-19 test德赢vwin官网AC米兰g, his group created a robot that can handle 100 patient samples with德赢vwin官网AC米兰 30 m德赢vwin官网AC米兰utes to get results anywhere.

Prof. Wagatsuma Hiroaki, currently an Associate Professor at Kyushu 德赢vwin官网AC米兰stitute of Technology (Kyutech) focuses on Bra德赢vwin官网AC米兰-德赢vwin官网AC米兰spired Systems Research (Bra德赢vwin官网AC米兰-IS). Alongside his Sakura Science collaboration with IIT Kanpur, his research is funded by different government grants 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Japan and his group collaborates with both academia and private companies 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 and outside of Japan. Bra德赢vwin官网AC米兰 IS tries to enhance human-mach德赢vwin官网AC米兰e 德赢vwin官网AC米兰teraction, and to help build 德赢vwin官网AC米兰telligent and social robots that can 德赢vwin官网AC米兰teract with us on a daily basis. Concrete examples would be automated driv德赢vwin官网AC米兰g systems or assistive devices, where the robot has to “th德赢vwin官网AC米兰k” real-time to make decisions. 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 his eye, PhD students from 德赢vwin官网AC米兰dia work德赢vwin官网AC米兰g 德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Japanese companies are highly evaluated with good salary.
