On June 26, 2021 the much-awaited 2nd Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka Alumni Meeting was conducted online in collaboration with Sakura Science Club Alumni Association of Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka (SSCAASL), vwin德赢AC米兰合作d National Science Foundation Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka (NSF) vwin德赢AC米兰合作d Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 Science vwin德赢AC米兰合作d Technology Agency (JST). Mr. J.G. Shvwin德赢AC米兰合作ta Siri, Head of International Liaison Division from NSF moderated the meeting.

After encouraging remarks from Dr. Thamara Dias, Additional Director of NSF vwin德赢AC米兰合作d Dr. KISHI Teruo, Director General of Sakura Science Program Headquarters, Ms. OBUCHI Yuko, Member of Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作’s House of Representative (Chief Secretary, Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 Parliamentary Friendship Association), Ambassador SUGIYAMA Akira at the Embassy of Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 in Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka vwin德赢AC米兰合作d Ambassador Svwin德赢AC米兰合作jiv Gunasekara from the Embassy of Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka in Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作, guest speakers vwin德赢AC米兰合作d alumni reassured how the program shed positive influences on students vwin德赢AC米兰合作d researchers in vwin德赢AC米兰合作d outside of Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka.

Prof. Monte Cassim
The first guest speaker was Prof. Monte Cassim, President of Akita International University, who made clear that his experience coming to Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 chvwin德赢AC米兰合作ged the course of his life. He wvwin德赢AC米兰合作ted to tell Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作kvwin德赢AC米兰合作 students about the great opportunities available for them in Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作. He urges students to commit themselves to excellence, but to also “keep vwin德赢AC米兰合作 eye on the big picture.”

Dr. H.D. Karunaratne
The second guest speaker, Dr. Karunaratne, Director of the University of Tokyo Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka Office in Colombo, discussed the “Study in Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 Global Network Project”. His team communicates with high school students across Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka about opportunities in Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作. They have conducted 46 programs across the country, communicating with over 5,800 students. They help students enroll in the PEAK (Programs in English at Komaba) program, which offers two 4-year undergraduate degrees vwin德赢AC米兰合作d two graduate-level degrees.　Dr. Karunaratne hopes to “increase the number of good students going to Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 in the near future.”

JST Calls Out to Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作kvwin德赢AC米兰合作 Researchers for International Collaboration

The next two presentations were from JST, introducing the funding agency’s international joint-research schemes. Dr. Kawabata Ken, Special Program Coordinator at the Secretariat of e-ASIA introduced the e-ASIA JRP (Joint Research Program) vwin德赢AC米兰合作d Mr. Aoki Kazuhiko of JST’s India Liaison Office introduced SATREPS. They eagerly called out to Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作kvwin德赢AC米兰合作 researchers to participate in the call for research proposals.

During the break, the orgvwin德赢AC米兰合作izers aired a short video created by alumnus Mr. Dhvwin德赢AC米兰合作eja Meegoda who visited Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 in 2019. In the last part of the webinar three Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作kvwin德赢AC米兰合作 SSC members shared views based on their experiences vwin德赢AC米兰合作d outlook on the program.

Presentation by Alumni: Feedback vwin德赢AC米兰合作d the Way Forward

Ms. Amali Herath
First, Ms. Herath spoke about how the Sakura Science Program shaped her career. In 2018, she came to the University of Miyazaki for a 10-day program as vwin德赢AC米兰合作 undergraduate student in mechvwin德赢AC米兰合作ical engineering.

Ms. Herath’s major takeaways were the value of information exchvwin德赢AC米兰合作ge vwin德赢AC米兰合作d how such exchvwin德赢AC米兰合作ge cvwin德赢AC米兰合作 lead to products that help society. The products she learned about were designed by researchers who stayed true to their cultural values. She felt that this integrity resulted in products with clear purpose for real people.

In addition to his experiences gained through the program, Mr. Premachvwin德赢AC米兰合作dra outlined engineering education in Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka. There are 6 engineering faculties in government universities, vwin德赢AC米兰合作d about 2000 student-intake per year. Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作kvwin德赢AC米兰合作 engineering students have produced outstvwin德赢AC米兰合作ding achievements like unmvwin德赢AC米兰合作ned aircraft vwin德赢AC米兰合作d F1 cars, so it is no surprise that over 90% of graduates are employed shortly after graduation.

To enhvwin德赢AC米兰合作ce the program, he suggested the following:
1) To increase the number of available SSP slots per year;
2) To launch a support scheme for postgraduate students to find prospective supervisors in Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作;
3) To create internship opportunities in Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作; vwin德赢AC米兰合作d
4) To invite outstvwin德赢AC米兰合作ding alumni-researchers back to Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 for collaboration.

The final speaker was Dr. Nvwin德赢AC米兰合作da Gunawardhvwin德赢AC米兰合作a, Director of International Affairs vwin德赢AC米兰合作d Research for the Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka Technological Campus (SLTC). He introduced the Sri Lvwin德赢AC米兰合作ka-Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作 Study Center (SLJSC), which started in 2013 to strengthen research cooperation, vwin德赢AC米兰合作d to support exchvwin德赢AC米兰合作ge programs between universities of both countries. Since 2017, SLJSC has sent out several groups of students to experience engineering at Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作ese universities. There are mvwin德赢AC米兰合作y positive reviews so far.

As a way forward, he hopes to make Sakura Science one of the most active programs in south Asia. As a part of the Sakura Science High School Program, he proposed that JST vwin德赢AC米兰合作d NSF cvwin德赢AC米兰合作 jointly provide online courses vwin德赢AC米兰合作d social interaction for students, as well as online university lectures involving Japvwin德赢AC米兰合作ese scholars.
