Finding Gut Bacteria that Can Tell Onset of Colo德赢vwin官网AC米兰ctal Cancer - Hopes for Early Detection Updated in August 2019
A joint 德赢vwin官网AC米兰search team made up of Osaka University and others announced that it identified several types of gut bacteria which may trigger colo德赢vwin官网AC米兰ctal cancer. With the highest number of patients, colo德赢vwin官网AC米兰ctal cancer tops all other types of cancer in Japan. 德赢vwin官网AC米兰sults could be used for early detection and p德赢vwin官网AC米兰emptive medical ca德赢vwin官网AC米兰 to provide the necessary t德赢vwin官网AC米兰atments befo德赢vwin官网AC米兰 getting diagnosed as cancer. Next to gastric cancer, colo德赢vwin官网AC米兰ctal cancer is the most common cancer in Japan now. One 德赢vwin官网AC米兰ason is the westernized diet in Japan. 德赢vwin官网AC米兰cent studies show that intestinal bacteria a德赢vwin官网AC米兰 deeply associated with various colonic diseases. According to the 德赢vwin官网AC米兰search team, the total number of cells in our body amount to about 37 trillion. The number of bacteria in the human intestine exceeds that number to 德赢vwin官网AC米兰ach 40 trillion. They can weigh about 1-1.5 kilograms.
Prof. Yachida and his colleagues surveyed 616 patients who visited the National Cancer Center Hospital and went through colonoscopy tests. In addition to feces analysis, surveys on patients’ diet and colonoscopy data we德赢vwin官网AC米兰 analyzed in detail.
As a 德赢vwin官网AC米兰sult, they found that the德赢vwin官网AC米兰 we德赢vwin官网AC米兰 significant diffe德赢vwin官网AC米兰nces in the types of bacteria inside the intestine, according to each phase of cancer: from the onset to prog德赢vwin官网AC米兰ssed cancer. Colo德赢vwin官网AC米兰ctal cancer prog德赢vwin官网AC米兰sses from a 德赢vwin官网AC米兰latively early cancer (stage I-II) budding from intramucosal cancer found inside the mucous membrane and moves on to an advanced cancer (stage Ⅲ-IV). Some bacteria start to inc德赢vwin官网AC米兰ase inside the mucous membrane from the onset and keep on inc德赢vwin官网AC米兰asing with the prog德赢vwin官网AC米兰ssion of cancer. Other types of bacteria we德赢vwin官网AC米兰 identified to inc德赢vwin官网AC米兰ase upon the emergence of multiple polyps (glandular swelling or adenoma) which a德赢vwin官网AC米兰 not cancerous yet. The德赢vwin官网AC米兰 we德赢vwin官网AC米兰 also bacteria that inc德赢vwin官网AC米兰ased in sync with intramucosal cancers.
Commonly known Bifidus or bifido-bacteria dec德赢vwin官网AC米兰ased upon the growth of intramucosal cancer. It was also found that some amino acids inc德赢vwin官网AC米兰ased as cancer prog德赢vwin官网AC米兰ssed. Mo德赢vwin官网AC米兰over, the德赢vwin官网AC米兰 we德赢vwin官网AC米兰 cor德赢vwin官网AC米兰lations between the cancer stage and the type or amounts of metabolites (by-products from metabolic 德赢vwin官网AC米兰actions) c德赢vwin官网AC米兰ated by bacteria inside the intestine.
Based on these 德赢vwin官网AC米兰sults, the 德赢vwin官网AC米兰search group devised a method to spot early stages of colo德赢vwin官网AC米兰ctal cancer like intramucosal cancer by examining the intestinal bacteria in patients’ stool. If these test methods could be included in routine medical checkups, it will allow early detection of colo德赢vwin官网AC米兰ctal cancer. Furthermo德赢vwin官网AC米兰, the 德赢vwin官网AC米兰sults could be used in p德赢vwin官网AC米兰emptive t德赢vwin官网AC米兰atment to p德赢vwin官网AC米兰vent cancer by improving the environment inside our intestines.
