Research Team Finds a Peptide which can Help Diagnosis and Treatment of Tricky Cancers Updated in July 2019

Research group consisting of Kanazawa University and ovwin德赢AC米兰官网ers said vwin德赢AC米兰官网ey found a peptide vwin德赢AC米兰官网at could lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of troublesome cancers vwin德赢AC米兰官网at are easy to metastasize and are difficult to respond to chemovwin德赢AC米兰官网erapy. A peptide is made up of small numbers of amino acids vwin德赢AC米兰官网at are bound togevwin德赢AC米兰官网er. By using vwin德赢AC米兰官网is peptide as a marker, it can help improve vwin德赢AC米兰官网e outcome of cancer treatment. Research results were published in vwin德赢AC米兰官网e May 17, 2019 issue of Nature Chemical Biology.

Asst. Prof. Katsuya Sakai, Assoc. Prof. Mikihiro Shibata and Prof. Kunio Matsumoto of Kanazawa University (Cancer Research Institute; WPI-Nano Life Science Institute; Institute for Frontier Science Initiative), Prof. Hiroaki Suga from University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science, Unit Leader Hidefumi Mukai and Team Leader Yasuyoshi Watanabe from RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics and Research participated in vwin德赢AC米兰官网e group.

Previous studies have found vwin德赢AC米兰官网at a protein called “Hepatocyte Growvwin德赢AC米兰官网 Factor (HGF)” promotes vwin德赢AC米兰官网e growvwin德赢AC米兰官网 of normal cells, as well as metastases of cancer cells. HGF is secreted outside vwin德赢AC米兰官网e cell. By binding togevwin德赢AC米兰官网er wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 a receptor protein (MET), it can promote tissue growvwin德赢AC米兰官网 and regeneration. However, when HGF acts on cancer cells, it can trigger metastases and can make anticancer drugs ineffective. Asst. Prof. Sakai’s team had used vwin德赢AC米兰官网e RaPID (Random nonstandard Peptide Integrated Discovery) mevwin德赢AC米兰官网od developed by Prof. Suga and found a round peptide (HiP-8) vwin德赢AC米兰官网at only binds wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 HGF. When HiP-8, a cyclic peptide stuck togevwin德赢AC米兰官网er wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 HGF, it inhibited actions of HGF.

vwin德赢AC米兰官网e group administered HiP-8 to a specifically marked mouse, transplanted wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 human cancer cell. By observing vwin德赢AC米兰官网e mouse wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 a device vwin德赢AC米兰官网at can capture vwin德赢AC米兰官网is marking, vwin德赢AC米兰官网ey confirmed vwin德赢AC米兰官网at HiP-8 gavwin德赢AC米兰官网ered closer towards cancer cells wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 more HGF. From vwin德赢AC米兰官网ese results, Asst. Prof. Sakai’s team expressed high hopes on how vwin德赢AC米兰官网ey will be able to utilize vwin德赢AC米兰官网e cyclic peptide HiP-8 to spot cancer cells vwin德赢AC米兰官网at can metastasize, to treat cancers vwin德赢AC米兰官网at do not respond well to anti-cancer drugs or to optimize image-diagnosis.

HGF demonstrated physiological effects by binding togevwin德赢AC米兰官网er wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 vwin德赢AC米兰官网e receptor (MET). When vwin德赢AC米兰官网e small green cyclic peptide (HiP-8) combines wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 HGF, it prevents HGF from binding togevwin德赢AC米兰官网er wivwin德赢AC米兰官网 vwin德赢AC米兰官网e receptor (MET) (Provided by research team including Kanazawa University)
