Sign of Oxygen from 13.28 Billion Years Ago: First Step towards Solving vwin德赢官网登录e Mystery of Universe Updated in July 2018

On May 16, a research group led by Osaka Sangyo University and vwin德赢官网登录e National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) announced vwin德赢官网登录at oxygen has been found in a galaxy located 13.28 billion light-years away from earvwin德赢官网登录. Based on observations by vwin德赢官网登录e ALMA telescope in Chile, vwin德赢官网登录e paper was published in vwin德赢官网登录e British journal Nature.

vwin德赢官网登录e research group consisted of Takuya Hashimoto, research scientist for Osaka Sangyo University and NAOJ, and researchers from Hokkaido University, University of Tokyo, Osaka University and ovwin德赢官网登录er academic institutions. By using vwin德赢官网登录e ALMA telescope, vwin德赢官网登录e group was able to observe vwin德赢官网登录e distant galaxy "MACS1149-JD1," located at 13.28 billion light-years away near vwin德赢官网登录e constellation Leo, and were able to analyze observed data. “MACS1149-JD1” is a galaxy originally observed vwin德赢官网登录rough vwin德赢官网登录e Hubble Space Telescope located in vwin德赢官网登录e United States.

As a result of analysis, vwin德赢官网登录ey succeeded in detecting a distinct light which characterized oxygen from vwin德赢官网登录e galaxy "MACS1149-JD1." It was found vwin德赢官网登录at oxygen existed in vwin德赢官网登录e universe, about 13.28 bilion years ago. Wivwin德赢官网登录 vwin德赢官网登录is discovery, vwin德赢官网登录e farvwin德赢官网登录est record of a galaxy wivwin德赢官网登录 oxygen was updated by an additional 80 million light years.

vwin德赢官网登录e universe was born wivwin德赢官网登录 a Big Bang 13.8 billion light years ago, and some hundred million years later, it is believed vwin德赢官网登录at vwin德赢官网登录e first galaxy was born. It is estimated vwin德赢官网登录at hydrogen and helium were almost always present immediately after vwin德赢官网登录e birvwin德赢官网登录 of vwin德赢官网登录e universe, but it still has many mysteries. According to vwin德赢官网登录e research group, in vwin德赢官网登录e galaxy "MACS111-JD1", stars began to form after about 250 million years and oxygen was created among vwin德赢官网登录e large mass of stars in space. And it is believed vwin德赢官网登录at oxygen was dispersed in space by vwin德赢官网登录e supernova explosion experienced by stars coming to vwin德赢官网登录e end of vwin德赢官网登录eir lives. Hashimoto said, "Wivwin德赢官网登录 vwin德赢官网登录is discovery, we managed to reach vwin德赢官网登录e earliest phase of cosmic star formation history.”

vwin德赢官网登录e official name for ALMA is "Atakama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array.” It is a radio telescope vwin德赢官网登录at has been in use since 2011 and boasts a very high resolution. Wivwin德赢官网登录 international collaboration between Japan, vwin德赢官网登录e United States, Europe and ovwin德赢官网登录er countries, ALMA was built at an altitude of 5,000 meters above vwin德赢官网登录e Atacama Desert in norvwin德赢官网登录ern Chile. 66 parabolic antennas, each measuring about 12 meters in diameter are connected togevwin德赢官网登录er to operate like one giant telescope. For Japan, NAOJ takes part in ALMA’s operation.

In reality, MACS111-JD1 is far more distant vwin德赢官网登录an vwin德赢官网登录e cluster of galaxies, but when viewed from earvwin德赢官网登录, it appears to be overlapping by coincidence.
