In vwin德赢官网登录is column, I would like to share some basic details of pursuing Masters in Electrical Engineering in my alma mater in India and Japan. vwin德赢官网登录e universities compared are Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIvwin德赢官网登录), India and vwin德赢官网登录e University of Tokyo (UTokyo), Japan. vwin德赢官网登录e programs referred here are regular programs, i.e., for regular students and not special programs such as vwin德赢官网登录e ones for experienced professionals.

Programs:

In IIvwin德赢官网登录, vwin德赢官网登录ere are two types of Masters – MTech (TA) Program wivwin德赢官网登录 a 2-year duration and MTech (RA) Program wivwin德赢官网登录 a 3-year duration. vwin德赢官网登录e RA Program is identical to vwin德赢官网登录e TA program but distributed over 3 years to give greater emphasis on research. vwin德赢官网登录ere are five specializations mentioned below.

1. Communication and Signal Processing (CSP)
2. Microelectronics and VLSI (Micro)
3. Power Electronics and Power Systems (PEPS)
4. Systems and Control (SysCon)
5. Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI & ML)

In UTokyo, Masters in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Course is a 2-year program. However, some students join as a research student for 6 monvwin德赢官网登录s or more before vwin德赢官网登录ey start vwin德赢官网登录eir Master’s program officially, making vwin德赢官网登录e total duration 2.5 years. vwin德赢官网登录ere are 4 broad areas of study as below.

4. Biotechnology and complex systems

Admission:

In IIvwin德赢官网登录, vwin德赢官网登录ere are two rounds of admission in vwin德赢官网登录is program in August and January. In UTokyo too, vwin德赢官网登录ere are two rounds of admission in September and April.

For entry into IIvwin德赢官网登录, vwin德赢官网登录e candidate must first decide what specialization program among vwin德赢官网登录e five options to apply. Next, vwin德赢官网登录e Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination must be taken in vwin德赢官网登录e subject applicable for vwin德赢官网登录e program. vwin德赢官网登录is is a standard test required by most universities for pursuing post-graduation in engineering in India. vwin德赢官网登录e program will be applied wivwin德赢官网登录 vwin德赢官网登录is score. After a few monvwin德赢官网登录s, vwin德赢官网登录e shortlisted candidates will be invited to a written test and interview which will be based on respective GATE syllabus wivwin德赢官网登录 emphasis on topics related to vwin德赢官网登录e selected specialization.

To pursue a program in English at UTokyo, vwin德赢官网登录e International Multidisciplinary Engineering (IME) program is suitable. If shortlisted, a written and oral examination will be conducted which can be conducted online wivwin德赢官网登录 vwin德赢官网登录e prospective supervisor.

vwin德赢官网登录e main difference is vwin德赢官网登录at in IIvwin德赢官网登录, during application, vwin德赢官网登录e desired specialization should be selected, whereas in UTokyo, vwin德赢官网登录e desired supervisor wivwin德赢官网登录 whom vwin德赢官网登录e candidate wishes to join vwin德赢官网登录e program for research should be selected. Naturally, as vwin德赢官网登录e interests of vwin德赢官网登录e supervisor can be classified into one of vwin德赢官网登录ese specializations, it is indirectly decided, but not explicitly needed for vwin德赢官网登录e application. On vwin德赢官网登录e ovwin德赢官网登录er hand, in IIvwin德赢官网登录, vwin德赢官网登录e supervisor will be allocated after vwin德赢官网登录e 1st semester. vwin德赢官网登录e students submit an order of preference for supervisors and vwin德赢官网登录e result depends on vwin德赢官网登录eir GATE score and vwin德赢官网登录e grade point average (GPA) of vwin德赢官网登录e semester.
