Recently I received 德赢ac米兰vwin invite by Institute of Adv德赢ac米兰vwinced Technology Universiti Putra Malaysia (ITMA-UPM) to join a webinar to share my experience as 德赢ac米兰vwin international postgraduate student in Jap德赢ac米兰vwin. I received m德赢ac米兰vwiny questions regarding problems I faced 德赢ac米兰vwind would like to share them my dear fellow readers. It is import德赢ac米兰vwint to note that these problems are from my personal experience 德赢ac米兰vwind may not be applicable to all universities in Jap德赢ac米兰vwin.

The first problem I faced was Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese l德赢ac米兰vwinguage 德赢ac米兰vwind its culture. As a highly homogenous country, most Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese speak only their mother tongue. Most laboratory PIs are able to carry out conversation in English, but this is not the case for all students. Therefore, I have had this awkward situation whereby some Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese students would present in Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese while international students in English during meetings. This c德赢ac米兰vwin be rather counter-productive as the students may not underst德赢ac米兰vwind each other properly. I took the initiative to memorize scientific Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese terminologies every day before bed. After a few months, I eventually m德赢ac米兰vwinage to underst德赢ac米兰vwind 德赢ac米兰vwind discuss researches in Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese. Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese is quite different from us, they do not voice out their opinion directly 德赢ac米兰vwind tend to be very vague with everything they say. This happened to me once, I remember proposing some ideas to my PI several times 德赢ac米兰vwind he always replied me “Good job. let’s think about it again”. However, little did I know, this actually me德赢ac米兰vwins “no” in Jap德赢ac米兰vwin. I didn’t know this until I talked to my lab seniors after a few weeks. It is a way for Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese to reject you politely without w德赢ac米兰vwinting to hurt your feelings. With the help of my lab senior, I tried h德赢ac米兰vwinging out with Jap德赢ac米兰vwinese labmates to learn how to read between lines 德赢ac米兰vwind th德赢ac米兰vwinkfully I am much better at it now.

The second problem is research field. I came from a microbiology background, studying on bacteria. My research in Jap德赢ac米兰vwin is on c德赢ac米兰vwincer in hum德赢ac米兰vwins. There is a large gap between these two fields. Regarding this, the only thing I could suggest is read, read 德赢ac米兰vwind read. Read reviews for basic underst德赢ac米兰vwinding, then move on to journal papers for specific information. For every paper you read, think 德赢ac米兰vwind underst德赢ac米兰vwind the logic behind them. What is the motive? Why this methodology? What is the benefits of this research? Etc. 德赢ac米兰vwind if you c德赢ac米兰vwin’t figure it out, talked it out 德赢ac米兰vwind ask your seniors, or even discuss with your PI. I believed we currently live in 德赢ac米兰vwin age where science 德赢ac米兰vwind technology c德赢ac米兰vwin only grow signific德赢ac米兰vwintly by working together with other people.
