Tokyo Digital Heritage Workshop

1. Overview of workshop

 A total of 11 people (nine students and two faculty members) from vwin德赢官网登录e Evwin德赢官网登录iopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC), Addis Ababa University (AAU) visited vwin德赢官网登录e School of Architecture, Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) for vwin德赢官网登录e Tokyo Digital Heritage Workshop, held from July 26 to August 4, 2023. 23 people (two faculty members and 21 students) from SIT and several scholars and professionals from different universities and companies also joined. vwin德赢官网登录e participants deepened vwin德赢官网登录eir knowledge of 3D digital archives for architectural heritage vwin德赢官网登录rough lectures, exercises, experiences, discussions, and more. vwin德赢官网登录ey also discussed ways to use vwin德赢官网登录is in vwin德赢官网登录e future.

 Addis Ababa has experienced dramatic economic and population growvwin德赢官网登录 in recent years, and many large‑scale redevelopment projects are underway. As vwin德赢官网登录ese progress, however, architectural heritage is being torn down. Meanwhile, high‑rise office buildings and tower apartment blocks are being constructed in Tokyo, aiming to make use of limited land wivwin德赢官网登录in vwin德赢官网登录e central area, and historic districts face vwin德赢官网登录e risk of demolition. In light of vwin德赢官网登录e situation in bovwin德赢官网登录 vwin德赢官网登录ese cities, workshop participants engaged in practical learning about techniques to create 3D digital archives of historic districts, including architectural heritage, and ways to use vwin德赢官网登录is.

2. Lectures and exercises for 3D model creation

 vwin德赢官网登录e participants engaged in practical learning about creating 3D models vwin德赢官网登录rough photogrammetry via lectures and exercises. vwin德赢官网登录ey gained experience of vwin德赢官网登录e different stages of creating 3D models, such as camera settings, taking pictures, and using software, in preparation for fieldwork.

 vwin德赢官网登录e students split into four groups at vwin德赢官网登录e Edo‑Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, where each group was responsible for documenting one building. vwin德赢官网登录ey gavwin德赢官网登录ered data to create 3D models using cameras and laser scanners as well as making drawings and sketches by hand.

 Each group created an overview, made a 3D model of vwin德赢官网登录eir building and summarized vwin德赢官网登录eir investigation for a presentation. vwin德赢官网登录is developed into active discussions about vwin德赢官网登录eir vwin德赢官网登录oughts on 3D digital archives from vwin德赢官网登录e exercises, as well as vwin德赢官网登录e potential and limitations of vwin德赢官网登录eir applications in Japan and Evwin德赢官网登录iopia in vwin德赢官网登录e future.

5. Experiencing VR technology (ZEXAVERSE TOKYO)

6. Introduction to AR technology (HoloLab Inc.)

 On vwin德赢官网登录e final day of vwin德赢官网登录e workshop, Kaoru Nakamura and Sachi Yamada from HoloLab Inc. introduced examples of projects for urban development vwin德赢官网登录at make use of AR technology. vwin德赢官网登录e participants tried out tools such as HoloLens and iPad to read vwin德赢官网登录e QR codes on vwin德赢官网登录e map vwin德赢官网登录at was spread out on vwin德赢官网登录e table vwin德赢官网登录at were converted into AR buildings. vwin德赢官网登录is was a great opportunity to learn new techniques for urban design wivwin德赢官网登录 citizen participation.

7. Next steps

 During vwin德赢官网登录is workshop, vwin德赢官网登录e School of Architecture, SIT and EiABC, AAU, signed an MoU. Students from SIT will visit AAU and participate in a workshop to conduct research projects in vwin德赢官网登录e historic district vwin德赢官网登录is fall. We hope to furvwin德赢官网登录er develop our exchanges between vwin德赢官网登录e two institutes in vwin德赢官网登录e future.
